  • My Last record "Far Horizons"

    (2018, Jazz&people)

"Driven by his unique sense of melody, bass player and composer Nico Moreaux’s new album is inspired as it is lyrical, and the lines from his bass highlight the music not unlike lines on a hand. The album, which basks in the beauties of nature’s gardens and is steeped in a profound belief of our inner depths, carries us to sublime horizons which are swept by the winds of jazz."

    ABOUT NICO

For more than a decade, the jazz scene have been blessed with a musician of a rare kind : bass player, composer and band leader Nico Moreaux. Throughout a string of records alongside the who's-who of contemporary jazz in France - Pierre Perchaud, Olivier Boge, Tony Paeleman, Tigran Hamasyan - he slowly earned the reputation of a bass player to be heard, and more importantly, felt. With a strong attachment to the essentials, and a unique sense of artistry and aesthetics, Moreaux seems in possession of a recipe that simply makes any band feel right at home. As a writer, his music display warmth, humour, and a love for strong and picturesque melodies, as can be heard in his wildely-hearded and awarded release "Fall Somewhere". And wether in concert or in his composed works Moreaux always appears driven by the same overaching quest : to deliver what is essential and true. (P.M)

Nicolas Moreaux is a descendant of 19th century french composer H.Berlioz. He has occasionally studied privately with masters Dennis Irwin, Ben Street, Johannes Weidenmueller, Larry Grenadier, all of whom teach clarity, the use of space, band support and creativity through the bass.

He has put out 3 records as a band leader (a two drums sextet), and 3 as a co-leader (FOX, Belleville Project) on several renowned labels (Freshsound, Sunnyside, Jazz&People). While his compositions had been qualified as poetic, energetic and melodic by the critics, they also display generously his ability to bring a large variety of colors in his writing. Inspired by a wide range of styles ranging from folk/rock, free, film scores and classical music, his last record "Fall Somewhere" received the prestigious award "Grand prix du disque Charles Cros" as the jazz record of the year 2013.

FOX (a collaborative band with Pierre Perchaud featuring Jorge Rossy and Chris Cheek) was nominated as a "Revelation" at the french TV/Radio "Victoires de la musique" awards in 2016.

Both FOX and Belleville Project are recipients of the "French American Jazz Exchange" by Mid Atlantic Art Foundation and ADAMI grants.

He had performed with : Tigran Hamasyan, Jeff Ballard, Chris Cheek, Jorge Rossy, Baptiste Trotignon, Bill McHenry, Vincent Peirani, Bugge Wesseltoft, Dan Tepfer, Hilmar Jenson, Emile Parisien, Rick Margitza, Óskar Gudjonsson, John Bestch, Lou Tavano, Macha Gharibian, Eric Lelann, Nelson Veras, Pedro Martins, Frederico Heliodoro, Scott Mclemore, Siggi Flossason, Högni Egilsson, Sigga Thorlacius, Eyþor Gunnarsson, Agnar Már Magnusson...
